Protection (2009, 5-6 min.)

Protection (2009, 5-6 min.)

notes Protection is one of my favorite songs I’ve written. Set to lyrics by the great Meghan Deans, who took inspiration from the story of an old cabin which was moved across a frozen lake in the winter. What of the impulse of the lake, to pull the cabin down?

lyrics
The outlanders circled around with sleds
It gets warmer when it snows
Bracing for all the mistakes they would make
I prayed while the sunset froze

I kissed the cracks underneath their feet
Breaking waves shadowing the glass
Bracing against the thinning ground
And prayed their souls to pass

Sometimes I just prefer the company of drowning

Two entire teams of horses
A bottleneck of moldy ropes
Rusty clamps, heavy chains
And bullets sleeping cased in their guns

As though protection could protect you
As though protection could protect you
The skid had none
And the water was clean just below the surface I breathed a ripple of anticipation
It snowed
It snowed

Sometimes I just prefer the company of drowning
Sometimes I just prefer the muted sounds of bodies sunk into my back
la, la-la, la-la, la-la

The ice was weak
But now they’re home

Eliza Bagg performing Complainers at Theatre at the ACE Hotel (presented by CAP-UCLA, 2021)

lyrics by Dorothea Lasky
Some people don’t want to die
Because you can’t complain when you’re dead
I hope heaven is just a bunch of men lying around
Ready to do what I say
Ready with dicks and some such

When I’m dead I won’t be looking for a partner
As much as a heavenly creature
After all I was promised virgins
But I don’t care about that as much
As the eyes looking into me in abandon
Like porn but better

Because there will be no screen
There will be no holy divider then
Between me and by brethren
And the smell of sunshine
Will emit from every brow
That’s the kind of thing I expect from death
That’s the kind of thing I’m waiting for

You Are Not Dead (2018, 3 min.)

Rachel Perry performing You Are Not Dead in In Your Mouth, Walker Art Center 2019

lyrics by Dorothea Lasky
I would love you if you were dead
But you are not dead you are alive
Your body ringing in me, ringing true
Ringing true, not like a blue nerve net
Encased in black
Not a red rubber heart encased in glass
Not a burned out body encased in glass
But a real thing, a soft thing
A soft and wild thing
I am so glad I left the world
And found the wildness beyond in you
I am so glad I was brave enough
To leave the place in me that was not wild
To go into the cave of life that is not dead

Why Go In Cars (2018, 3 min.)

Nathan Koci plays Why Go In Cars with Dorothea at Theatre at the ACE Hotel (presented by CAP-UCLA), May 2021

lyrics by Dorothea Lasky
Why go in cars
They can be destroyed
I don’t want to be destroyed by you
I love you and your want

We don’t need cars
Why don’t we sit in a sea of violets
I could kiss you a million times
And never be sick of it

Let’s go sit in some flowers
Darling boy
Let’s sit in a sea of flames
And I will never put the fire
Out of you

Everyone Keeps Me (2018, 6 min.)

Ted Hearne performing Everyone Keeps Me at Carnegie Hall, October 2023

lyrics by Dorothea Lasky
Everyone keeps me from my destiny
Keeps me from it
And keeps me locked away from beauty
And they can’t feel my beauty
In me reaching out
Like glass into itself
And then into glass
And everyone keeps me from myself
Cause the self they had imagined
Was flesh and bone
And this flesh I am is glass
And everyone keeps me from my genius
Because genius is not human
And everyone wants me to be human
And I am not human
And everyone expects me to be something they are, which is human
And I can’t be anything they are which is human
Because I am not human
And they are
And I am not human

EVERYONE KEEPS ME

I Am Sick of Feeling (2017, 7 min.)

from Blue Falling by Rachel Perry

lyrics by Dorothea Lasky
I am sick of feeling
I never eat or sleep
I just sit here and let the words burn into me
I know you love her
And don’t love me
No, I don’t think you love her
I know there are clouds that are very pretty
I know there are clouds that trundle round the globe
I take anything I can to get to love
Live things are what the world is made of
Live things are black
Black in that they forgot where they came from
I have not forgotten, however I choose not to feel
Those places that have burned into me
There is too much burning here, I’m afraid
Readers, you read flat words
Inside here are many moments
In which I have screamed in pain
As the flames ate me

FARMING WILL BE RELEASED ON DEATHBOMB ARC RECORDS, OCT 2025

Ted Hearne, Farming
score cover image by Nia Easley

notes Farming looks to the long-tail impact of settler colonialism and its philosophical motivations on agricultural degradation, big tech utopianism, labor alienation, corporate religiosity, and the abstraction of community — and sets these interrogations to a unique and bombastic sound world that marries disparate strains of post-modern musics, auto-tune choirs, and hyper pop.

This hour-long work is a setting of two primary texts — those of the colonist William Penn, in his writings to and about the Lenape people as he was in the process of colonizing the land they were occupying (the land now known as Pennsylvania); and Jeff Bezos, from various speeches and interviews about the expansion of Amazon. These two voices are set as a dialogue. Interspersing them are texts from various advertising around the industry of modern food production: tweets from UberEats in the year following the onset of the pandemic; copy selling the Farmer’s Fridge rewards program; the services of law firms who want to help you process H-2A nonimmigrant worker visas.

We Are Working Tirelessly For a Ceasefire (2025, 7-8 min.)

notes In a [2004 interview] with Susan Briante, the Chilean visual artist Cecilia Vicuña framed her own work as a response to our collective “unwillingness to see.” She said: Democracy is like a poem, if you don’t use it, it disappears. The media and [political, social, economic] powers have found a way to speak about democracy as if it were a given, something that is already here. That is a substitution of reality. It represents a desire to see an image instead of what is real.”

We Are Working Tirelessly for a Ceasefire
is a reflection on this desire — the impulse to construct our own reality through incessant reiteration.

The title refers to the assurance given by many American liberal leaders and policy makers throughout the 2024 election cycle, in full contradiction of reality, that they were doing everything they could to pressure the state of Israel to stop their assault on the people of Gaza.

from 2025 West End production of Elektra:
director Daniel Fish

written fall 2024 / winter 2025
produced by Empire Street Productions
premiered Duke of York's Theatre on the London West End

notes

I wrote about 25 minutes of music for Daniel Fish’s new production of Sophocles’ Elektra, which set Anne Carson’s stark and powerful translation in a staging that premiered with a 12-week run on London’s West End.

Several stand-alone works for treble voices (SSAA) come from this material, and will be available soon. Inquire for more info!

Elektra, haunted by her father's assassination, is consumed by grief; a need for survival; and a thirst for vengeance. When her long lost brother Orestes at last returns, she urges him to a savage and terrifying conclusion but at what cost?

Elektra, played by the fearless Brie Larson (Room, Lessons in Chemistry), sings some lines throughout, and is accompanied by a Greek Chorus of 6 women who sing throughout (Adeola Yemitan, Wallis Currie-Wood, Rebecca Thorn, Nardia Ruth, Jo Goldsmith-Eteson, Hannah Bristow), engaging Elektra with consideration and dignity despite their hesitation and ambivalence.

Study Buddy (2021, 3 min.)

notes
Study Buddy is a short and pugnacious etude written for Dynasty Battles. In the piece, machine-like sputterings of precisely-aligned octave jumps alternate with sections defined by rhapsodic gestures inspired by a speed-addled rendition of Rachmaninoff. It’s an ode to the Romantic etude and an homage to Dynasty's multistylistic musical background.

In The Language of Truth (2022, 10 min.)

In The Language of Truth (2022, 10 min.)

notes In the Language of Truth is a setting of a correspondence sent by newly elected U.S. President Andrew Jackson to the Creek Indians, in the Spring of 1829. In this letter, Jackson uses familiar and familial language as part of an argument to compel the Creek to “voluntarily” leave their ancestral lands and remove to territory West of the Mississippi.

In the Language of Truth was commissioned by Conspirare and Craig Hella Johnson for an October 2022 premiere in Austin, Texas, with the Miro Quartet.

text PRESIDENT ANDREW JACKSON
[“Letter to the Creek Indians,” 03.23.1829]

My children, listen

Friends and brothers
I have always told you the truth

I speak to you as your father I speak to you as your friend

Your warriors have known me long You know I love my white and red children And always speak straight
And not with a forked tongue
That I have always told you the truth

I speak to you
As my children
In the language of truth

Listen:
Your bad men have made my heart sicken and bleed

My children, listen

Your game is destroyed
Your people will not work and till the Earth

Where you now live

Your white brothers Have always claimed the land

Where you now are You and my white children Are too near to each other To live in peace

My white children Have extended their law Over your country

Your father has provided a country There your white brothers will not trouble you They will have no claim to the land
You can live upon it
You and all your children
It will be yours forever
You will be subject to your own laws Your father will pay you a fair price
Your father will dealy fairly and justly with you He feels a father’s love for you

I speak to you
As my children
In the language of truth

Listen:
Your bad men have made me sicken and bleed These bad men must be delivered up

Friends and brothers, listen This is straight and good talk It is for your nation’s good

Your father requests you hear his counsel

notes

Ligeia Mare is a sci-fi electronic fantasy opera written and composed by Damon Davis. Inspired by the life and philosophy of jazz legend Sun Ra, the story follows Cosmo, an awkward adolescent with the gift of astral projection while dreaming. The project explores themes of self-empowerment, familial relationships, and the Black imagination. Ultimately it is a story that explores how myths can be doorways to reclaiming our identity.

In its first iteration, the project is taking the form of a Radio Opera or podcast that will be released in 8 episodes and features 16-year-old Florissant teen Isaiah Taylor as Cosmo, as well as Rockwell Knuckles and Aloha Mischeaux as Cosmo’s parents. The Radio Opera is performed by Alarm Will Sound, conducted by Alan Pierson, with instrumental arrangements by Ted Hearne, and choral arrangements by Dave Ragland Jr. This project is funded by Alarm Will Sound through its Matt Marks Impact Fund and by OPERA America’s IDEA Opera Grants program, supported by the Charles and Cerise Jacobs Charitable Foundation.

Damon Davis teams with Alarm Will Sound for a space opera rooted in Black music

notes
Freefucked is a suite of five songs set to poems by Kemi Alabi, from their first full length poetry collection "Against Heaven". Xan Phillips calls Alabi's poems "a sacrament to the underworld, ushering in a vast network of ritual and erotic apertures." Kemi's poems honor the wounds of inheritance while simultaneously activating their magic.

My musical setting for Seth Parker Woods seeks to reflect this vast network and duality through soulful singing, evocative vocal processing, and a patchwork of sharp musical juxtapositions and references.

First World (2012, 7 min.)

notes

First World is a palindrome of sorts, constructed from many pre-existing musical materials, arranged as a cut-and-pasted patchwork. Some of the material for this piece comes from the Classical canon, meant to be heard as shards filtered through this strange and boisterous instrumentation. Other bits of material come from previous works of mine, or the music of friends -- fellow composers looking skeptically or hopefully toward Classical/European traditions. These freely interpreted and scrawled-upon excerpts are sequenced in a kind of house of cards structure that relies on sharp juxtapositions and stylistic and rhythmic changes-on- dimes to make meaning.

The piece eventually transformed, evolved and was subsumed into my work for string orchestra Law of Mosaics, as the movement “Palindrome for Andrew Norman.”

To Be Whole Is To Be Part (2021, 9 min.)

To Be Whole Is To Be Part (2021, 9 min.)

notes

To be whole is to be part;
true voyage is return.

- Ursula K. Le Guin, The Dispossessed (1974)

This is a song, and an interlocking lattice. Each of the 14 ensemble members are asked to delineate blocks of time differently and individually, mostly playing short cells that repeat and evolve in unique and divergent cycles. Uneven or contradictory cells are layered into the conglomerate, each springing from the last. Can these multiple blocks generate a differential kind of time?

This piece is inspired in part by:
- the sprawling and in some ways lo-fi music of the 00's experimental rock/post-rock scene (and bands such as Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Swans)
- interlocking cellular music of early 70's Miles Davis (i.e. On the Corner), and its mathier offspring of subsequent generations (Makaya McCraven, Nik Bärtsch)

- counterpoint as a simultaneity of autonomous textures, styles, cultures, feels, overlapping maps

- any claim toward objectivity or authority

- systems of control and subjugation of viewpoints that are founded on such claims
- multiple viewpoints, multiple realities

To Be Whole Is To Be Part is dedicated to Wim Boerman and the ongoing legacy of orkest de ereprijs.
