Inheritance (2021, 5 min.)

Inheritance (2021, 5 min.)

notes
After his father’s unexpected death, pianist Adam Tendler used his inheritance, a wad of cash received in a parking lot, to begin a commissioning project inviting a broad spectrum of sound artists and composers to create new piano works exploring the idea of 'inheritance' itself. Woven into one intimate program, these pieces tell a universal story of lineage, loss, and place, and become a meditation on confronting our past while moving forward into the future.

This five-minute piece is one of many created for this special program.

Johannes Moser

notes:
Lobby Music is a somewhat assaultive piece for cello and electronics, written for the brilliant cellist Johannes Moser as part of a commissioning project that includes music by several of my friends and colleagues.

Musically, I was inspired by the maximalist cynicism of hyperpop, and the ways this propulsive and recombinant aesthetic movement may reflect the choices of a generation coming of age in an era of colliding crises.

Layered into the synth- and beat-heavy electronic track is a field recording from an August 2020 protest in Kenosha, Wisconsin, taken in the moments after 17-year old Kyle Rittenhouse shot and killed two men, and wounded another. The protest was taking place in response to the police shooting of Kenosha resident Jacob Blake. Rittenhouse, armed with an AR-15, had traveled to Kenosha and joined other armed men who said they were there to protect businesses.

Also included in the track is a sample of an improvisational video uploaded to Facebook, in which master bagpiper Matthew Welch is playing pipes while his infant son, Mason Welch-Leuch, plays with a little keyboard and sings along.

This work was originally commissioned to be performed in the lobby of classical music performance halls, before the main event had started, or during intermission. My compositional choices here were also influenced by the verb form of the word lobby, that is: to seek to influence.

LOBBY MUSIC

notes
This short piece was written for inclusion in “Alone Together,” an initiative conceived, produced and performed by the violinist Jennifer Koh. Jennifer brought us together in a time of isolation and quarantine to commission 24 composers. She presented four world premieres, livestreamed from her home every Saturday night, throughout April, May and June 2020.

Distance Canon is inspired by Pan Shancu, who ran a marathon in his 1-bedroom apartment in Hangzhou while isolated during the first month of quarantine. It's kind of an etude for the left hand and relentless string crossings, as athletic gestures circle and layer on top of one another. A picture of a creative on house arrest feigning serentiy.

Violinist Maiani da Silva breathed new life into the piece with her interpretation and new video in 2021.

The Luminous Road (2020, 2 min)

crater lake moon.jpg

notes “The luminous road to the moon was strong and familiar as I made my way to the old man who was my guardian there. We did not need words to talk.”

- Joy Harjo
from her memoir Crazy Brave

This short piece was written for inclusion in The Fanfare Project, an initiative conceived, produced and commissioned by The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Cincinnati Pops, pairing composers with instrumentalists to create a repertoire of short “fanfares” for solo instruments.

The Luminous Road, for Nathalie Joachim, remains almost entirely in the lowest octave of the piccolo, a relentless progression of cells, a quiet but ever-persistent call for attention and urgency.

Many thanks to Nate Bachhuber and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra for engaging the contemporary music community with this uplifting initiative in a moment of collective uncertainty, and to Nathalie Joachim for her collaboration in the creation of this work.

Pam Tanowitz

notes Loosely based on an idea from Jorge Luis Borges’s “Garden of Forking Paths,” Time is forever dividing itself toward innumerable futures is a 40 minute work commissioned for Pam Tanowitz Dance, premiered on a foggy summer night at Rockefeller Park in Lower Manhattan.

Scored for myself to sing with four french horns and electric guitar, this textural piece plays with repetition, palindromes and alternate realities.

In Thrall (2019, 15 min)

Arx Duo is Mari Yoshinaga and Garrett Arney

Arx Duo is Mari Yoshinaga and Garrett Arney

notes In Thrall focuses on the interdependency of different groups. Two solo percussionists shift their weight in time against each other, see-sawing polyrhythms. The ensemble behind them pulses in sound clouds that ebb and flow, demarcating disparate but interlocking periods of time.

The percussionists play mostly cymbals, slipping in and out of audible articulation by con- trolling the degree to which the instrument is dampened or allowed to ring, and by varying the location on the instrument that is being struck. Led by this cymbal sound, but echoed in all instruments, the music highlights confounding moments when clearly different pulses fuse into one sound.

The title is drawn from a 2017 lecture by Judith Butler, “The Human Condition.” In it, Butler asks us to consider “a set of relations without which there is no self” —

“The self is not a bounded entity, but as something that is bound to others. As bound up with others alternatively, bound and unbound, the self is a set of relations, is nothing outside those relations, and even in referring to itself it is referring to nothing other than those set of relations that make survival possible.

The term bound carries complex resonances here. If the self is bounded, it is discrete, defined by its boundary, and so defined precisely by what differentiates that self from others. If the self is bound to others, then it is in thrall, in relationship, and there is no in itself and no boundary that establishes the self as a discrete entity. Indeed, the self is always negotiating the loss of its discreteness, its boundary, and this is an invariable feature of its sociality.

And though we might think in commonsensical ways that we will lose the “self” if we lose our “boundary” — most Americans feel that way, for whatever reason — it is surely more fundamentally true that if we are unable to lose or loosen the boundary, we cannot live in relations with others, which means that we cannot live.”

notes Authority is a series of 10 movements.

This piece is played without pause. Some movements are overlaid on top of one another; at times different groups of instruments may be playing two movements simultaneously, and at times groups of musicians may be playing at different tempi.

The conductor may attempt to control the flow of activity by setting tempi and cueing entrances and other significant events, but some sections of music will need to be played without assistance from the conductor.

The control over how and from whom this music moves should be passed back and forth like a dance.

This music is inspired by:
- the impulse to strive for or achieve authority
- the impulse to conflate authority and power
- the belief in objectivity that would make the existence of authority possible
- any claim toward objectivity
- systems of control, or subjugation of viewpoints, that are founded on such claims, from the governmental to the pedagogical to the musical
- multiple viewpoints, multiple realities

Brass Tacks (2018, 6 min)

NYO-USA-musicians-at-Carnegie-Hall-2017.jpg

notes
Brass Tacks is a noisy dance, playful and ferocious. Inspired by Miami bass, the short lived Louisville-centered dance craze “the Shizz” and the rhythmic energy and dance culture of the hip-hop of the South, the piece combines pointed and ecstatic repetition with a noise-based approach to orchestral instrumental writing. The louds are bright and clangy bursts and the softs are barely audible hisses and squeaks.

Brass Tacks was written for the astounding National Youth Orchestra of the USA (a project of Carnegie Hall) to play on their tour of China and Korea in 2018, with Michael Tilson Thomas conducting.

Chelsea Lyons performing Animals with The Crossing

text
“These aren’t people. These are animals.”

New York Times review of The Crossing’s premiere of Animals:
“The most powerful statement, and the only work exploiting the full, astonishing range of vocal techniques of The Crossing’s singers, was Ted Hearne’s Animals…. In this haunting piece, the members of the choir produced animalistic howls and shrill yelps, barks and sniffs. Here and there, the wild sounds calmed into stretches of floating harmonies, and groups of singers hissed the words in spoken unison.”

notes

This piece is derived from a phrase of music in J.S. Bach’s 1731 motet for double-choir, Komm, Jesu, Komm (BWV 229). In this work, Bach mines the responsorial possibilities of the Venetian antiphonal tradition to a stunning extent. Fervor creates an echo chamber from this material, exploring the fusion of response and call.

In Your Mouth (2019-2020, 12 songs, 65 min)

Dorothea Lasky

Dorothea Lasky

notes The lush, stinging poetry of Dorothea Lasky inspired this song cycle-turned-band. A revolving set of 12+ songs are in turns sardonic and sincere, sitting in the dissonance between inner wildness and outer presentation.

At our show at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the performance included a real-time installation by conceptual artist Rachel Perry and stage direction by Daniel Fish.

Our live performance video from CAP-UCLA (see below) included lighting by Thomas Dunn.

Our performance at Carnegie Hall featured direction by Ash Tata, new video design by Thomas Dunn, and the work of Rachel Perry.

notes

So in the end we can come down to the fact that the baby communicates creatively and in time becomes able to use what is found. For most people the ultimate compliment is to be found and used, and I suppose therefore that these words could represent the communication of the baby with the mother.

I find you;
You survive what I do to you as I come to recognize you as not-me;
I use you;
I forget you;
But you remember me;
I keep forgetting you;
I lose you;
I am sad.

[D.W. Winnicott, "Communication between infant and mother, and mother and infant, compared and contrasted," 1968]

notes Written for the opening of WildUp's Ascension, this chaotic-sounding but precisely-notated piece is an odd but rousing barnburner for metric modulation geeks. Its multitudes of single wind instruments in ecstatic heterophony is inspired in part by John Coltrane's 1966 album Ascension

notes
Exposure is in some way about the fear of making choices. There are times when the thought of complete commitment to any idea only amplifies the cries of potential paths not taken. For me, the energy in this piece is found in the way slices of musical material interact with one other, rather than through a
complete immersion in the material itself.

In the first movement, two very different types of music are laid next to each other, at first bleeding into each other and eventually fighting for space. The latter half of this movement is a mobile of musical fragments separated by jump cuts. I'm interested in the ways that particular coloristic bowing techniques (like the weight and speed of bow strokes, and the position of the bow on the instrument) can be used to control the character of musical fragments and heighten contrast between them.

The third movement is an overlay of two ideas, both derived from works by a revered teacher of mine, David Lang. I took the harmonic progression from one section of Lang's works (the opera The Difficulty of Crossing a Field) and superimposed it on a pattern scheme from another (the percussion quartet The So-Called Laws of Nature). The quartet plays a litany of percussive sounds in rhythmic precision, including those produced by bowing on the bout of the instrument, laterally on the strings, and playing with the winding of their bows.

The second and fourth movements are like verses of a song. The viola, in a way the emotional explorer of the entire piece, is like the singer.

Overlay (for David Lang) performed by the Argus Quartet
